Why Am I Gaining Weight on a Vegetarian Diet?

Read Transcript

I see a lot of patients in my practice they gain weight on a vegetarian diet and there is a lot of different reasons. First of all they have to many starchy carbohydrates things like pasta, and bread, and cereal, and rice to fill up, second of all they don't eat enough protein.

Protein is really important to maintain your muscle mass to feel full and also to build a lot of important cells in your body including a healthy immune system and finally the proteins that they do eat tend to much higher in calories. Things like cheese and nut and beans are more calorie dense, so they can really easily add up, to eating too many calories, so it is very easy to gain weight on a vegetarian diet, even though it is healthier in many cases.
