Production of human growth hormone (HGH) production slows as we age, but it's possible to still reap the benefits of this crucial substance. In this video, sports nutrition specialist Leslie Bonci talks age and HGH.
Well, one of the things that does happen with growth hormone is that we produce less of it as we get older, the way that it is and so we don't necessarily have to say, oh, forget it, I'm just resigned to not having enough growth hormone. What are you going to do to help your body to produce some more? You're going to lift some weights, you're going to work on your sleep and you are going to make sure that you're getting adequate protein and if you do those three things, you're going to be able to produce more growth hormone, not as much as a teenager or a child, but still better than it would be if you didn't do those three things.
Leslie Bonci, MPH is director of sports nutrition at the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine in Pittsburgh, PA. She is a registered dietitian and board certified specialist in sports nutrition.
