Hyperemesis gravidarum, which impacts a small percentage of pregnant women, requires serious medical attention due to the risks of dehydration. In this video, OB/GYN specialist Lauren Streicher, MD, explains why this condition shouldn't be ignored.
Women that have hyperemesis gravidarum need medical help and they need it sooner rather than later. This is not something to fool around with because pregnant women can normally get dehydrated very quickly, but can become very quickly ill, so if you're not able to keep anything down, if you're loosing large amounts of weight, you need to call your doctor because at minimum you are going to need an intervene as fluids, you may need some medications to avert the nausea an many women often actually end up in hospital.
Lauren Streicher, MD is assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University in Chicago. Dr. Streicher is a diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
