What Causes Endometriosis?

Read Transcript

There's lots of theories as to what causes endometriosis, one cause is people just think that endometriolonic cells just start growing in the the abdomen, but the most common cause and the cause that I tell my patients, is you have what's called retrograde menstruation. Every time you have a menstrual cycle, the blood comes out through the cervix, and into the vagina.

Well often times, the fallopian tubes are almost like a back flow valve, and endometriosis goes backwards through the fallopian tubes, and sometimes when the endometriosis goes back to the fallopian tubes, the endometrio lining cells that your body is shedding, can implant in pelvis and can even start growing.
