How Does Birth Control Treat Endometriosis?

Read Transcript

When patients have mild Endometriosis the treatment often times is birth control pills, and the birth control pills don't kill off the Endometriosis. What I tell patients is the birth control pills, we give you the same pill everyday so you have the same hormone levels every day.

So your hormone levels are just kind of a flat line like that, and by not having the ups and downs of your hormone levels that decreases the swelling and contracting of the endometrial implants in your pelvis. Sometimes I'll put patients on continuous birth control pills where they don't have a menstrual cycle, and often times making them not have a menstrual cycle will also make them not have retrograde menstruation and will decrease the chances of Endometriosis growing, but by no stretch of the imagination does birth control pills cure Endometriosis.
