What Increases Breast Cancer Risk in Women?

Read Transcript

Well just being a woman is a risk factor. The average woman has about one in 12 lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. Things that can add to that risk are delayed onset of the first pregnancy, early onset menstruation, hormones post-menopausally, exposure to radiation is a known risk factor, one of the most common risk factors we look at people with multiple family members like Angelina Jolie who is gene positive.

We also have some of the biopsies we do on the breast show precancerous changes and those women are at high risk and we follow them carefully. In these high risk women we add the MRI to the regular examination in addition to the mammogram, the self exam and the clinical exam.
