What Is a Myomectomy?

Read Transcript

Myomectomy is surgically cutting into the uterus and removing one or a small number of fibroids, and then sewing the uterus back together. It has two main approaches, you either can do the open myomectomy which is a traditional surgical approach either cutting a woman horizontally and entering the uterus or vertically.

The other approach is laparoscopic, so instead of open surgery you can do multiple puncture holes blow up the abdomen with carbon dioxide and then operate on her through these multiple smaller puncture holes with what are called laproscopes, these are instruments specifically designed for this less invasive surgery.

There's also a sub set of Laparoscopic surgery called Robotic surgery, where instead of the surgeon holding the instruments, the Laparoscopic instruments robotic arms are holding the instruments.
