If you have a parent who has suffered from the disease of addiction or alcoholism you chances are four times greater that you may suffer from the same problem. Certainly other risk factors may be having too little money, having too much money, both poverty and affluence are significant risk factors.

Those folks that you hang out with who have party reputations, enjoy frequent raves, gatherings where alcohol and drugs are used regularly are certainly significant risk factors, availability, doctor shopping is a very important risk factor, having cold morbid problems like psychiatric difficulties, depression, anxiety, hyper-activity, to name a few, as well as chronic pain issues.
