Age spots are extremely common, but that doesn't make them any easier to take. In this video, dermatologist Elizabeth Hale, MD, explains why they occur and how they can be avoided.
These spots are a very common cosmetic concerns for patients and I find that they occur most commonly on the face, on the neck, on the back of the hands. These are areas that are chronically exposed to ultraviolet radiation. So we know that UVA rays, or ultraviolet A rays penetrate through clouds, through windows and they penetrate even year round in the dead of winter.
Those UVA rays causes increased production of melanin, which can result in unsightly age spots, uneven texture, undesirable wrinkles and so much of these can be prevented by using a daily broad spectrum sunscreen.
Elizabeth K. Hale, MD practices at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of NY. She specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery, dermatologic surgery, cosmetic dermatology, and laser surgery.
