What Causes Lip Lines?

Read Transcript

Lip lines are one of the most complicated complains that patients have, because they show up over time. Sun is a very big factor in causing those lines, along with smoking, two things we have control over. Sunscreen makes a big difference even if lines are already present, and of course quitting smoking is one of the most positive things you can do for every organ system, but especially the skin because it's directly toxic to the skin.

Other things are that we lose some volume in bone and even in our teeth. So when I see someone with a lot of lip lines I ask them to smile and what I notice is often times their teeth are kind of angling in and that doesn't give any support to the lip so every time they talk or close their lips, they make the lines.

One simple trick is to not have your lips touch. The less your lips touch, the less you press them, the less you make those lines. Looking for products that contain retinol, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C can be very powerful in that area as well. Sometimes I kind of cheat and I use my eye products on my upper lip and that works really well too.
