How Do You Treat Constipation And Other Common Side Effects of Taking Opioids?

Read Transcript

Constipation is one of those very tricky things with opioid pain medication, it doesn't really get better on it's own, so I usually give people a stool softener and a laxative and maybe some third agent also that they can use, as soon as they start taking opioids even if it's for acute pain like a broken bone because otherwise you're always playing catch-up with the constipation.

There are other side effects too like nausea, sometimes sedation or tiredness itching can be another side effect, we can give them something that would help them with the side effects, but usually they would get better on their own after some time if the person just gets used to the medication the real thing that always is hard to treat is constipation.
