A spirometer can be a handy tool to help manage asthma, as Clifford Bassett, MD, explains in this WisePatient video. It's a simple lung-function test to measure your peak flow.
The spirometer will measure the air capacities, breathing in, breathing out, flow rates and give me a direct or indirect measure in terms of what's happening to your lungs. It's a more of a physiological measure to see how asthma may be affecting your lungs and this computer-based graphic will provide a curve and a picture of some of the flow rates if you have asthma, and again important in terms of diagnosing and also managing asthma more correctly.
