What Causes Asthma?

Read Transcript

Asthma is a multi factorial type of illness, it's largely genetic, if one parent has asthma, the chances of a child having asthma is about 25% to 33 % two parents it's about 50% to 75% so it's a very genetic based. Tell me not only who you are give me your family history, and what I'll often do in the office is an asthma family tree, combining it with the environment, pollution, diesel exhaust, global warming, climate change, more pollen production worldwide.

Those are the environmental aspects. Do you have somebody that's exposed to a tobacco smoker? That may increase the risk of asthma in a child by 50 fold so it's always going to be a equation between the environment plus the genetics which is your susceptibility..
