Some foods that contain dairy are ones you may not expect; before you eat anything, you need to be aware of certain ingredients. Watch allergist Clifford Bassett, MD, discuss some hidden dairy sources and why it's important to read labels carefully.
It's all about what you put into your mouth. If you go to a dairy, or a restaurant, speak up, I give my patient a shopping ingredient card that has list of all the ingredient such as cows' milk that they can't come in contact with, that may precipitate an allergic reaction. Cosmetics, creams, sausages, hot-dogs, even a can of tuna fish may contain casein which is a major milk protein that can create havoc, if you have an allergic reaction to dairy.
Do your homework before you put something in your mouth. If you have a food allergy particularly to cows' milk proteins, don't take a chance, get the answers, see an allergist, get tested, find out what you need to avoid.
Clifford Bassett, MD is an adult and pediatric allergy specialist, and diplomate of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and medical director, Allergy and Asthma Care of NY.
