Most people develop addictions due to not feeling good about themselves, a genetic predisposition, or because they feel camaraderie with others engaging in the same behavior. Watch psychologist Brenda Wade, PhD, discuss some key causes of addiction.
Most people develop addictions for one of three reasons and sometimes it's all three reasons. Number one is not feeling good about ourselves, that's the number one reason we fall into addiction. That addiction makes us forget the pain and feel better. The second reason is if there's addiction in family.
Children's brains are programed we know this, 80% of subconscious problems go in before the age of eight. So if you're watching your parents do a behaviour like smoking, drinking, over eating. You're very likely to pick it up because a child's brain is like a little miniature video camera everything gets recorded.
The third reason is as if it's not enough that I and might have parents with I don't feel good about myself I want to feel better. The third reason is I get some gratification and I get sort of a community around me of other people that do it.
