The Health Benefits of Sharing Your Secrets

Hi, I'm Dr. Oz, and here's a simple tip that can help reduce stress, lower your blood pressure and boost your immunity. Share your deepest, darkest secrets with a friend. When you keep a secret about a difficult embarrassing or even traumatic event, it weighs you down emotionally. A recent study confirms that keeping personal secrets makes everything seem harder, and that can interfere with healthy habits like exercise and a smart diet.

There's also a plenty of proof that sharing your burden lightens your emotional load and boosts your health. When you're ready to reveal a secret, share it with the right person. Divulge your sensitive info to a supportive friend who will keep your confidence. If it's an extremely upsetting experience, you may want to talk to a therapist.

Describe your secret in three ways, tell what happened, what you think about it and how it makes you feel. Putting your feelings, even negative ones into words, is especially healing. And sharing your secret doesn't have to be public. Writing it down in your journal can be just as helpful. So, go ahead and confide a secret, you'll feel much better, and I won't tell.
