Hi, I'm Dr. Miller. We all have occasional mood swings. Try these tips to keep your mood on an even keel. Focus on gratitude, keep a daily gratitude journal of all the things you are grateful for. This helps shift your thoughts away from feeling helpless, hopeless and lonely. Skip the junk food and eat more plant-based meals.
Salty, sugary junk food boost body-wide inflammation and that raises your risk for depression a lot than 51%. But fruits veggies and whole grains help fight inflammation, so do healthy fats found in nuts, olive oil and cold water fish like salmon. Improve your sleep, poor quality sleep raises your depression rates.
If insomnia or sleep apnea keeping you up at night, it's time to see your doctor. Take steps to reduce stress, high level chronic stress cranks up anxiety hormones and your depression risk. Try yoga. Just one session raises levels of depression fighting brain chemicals by whooping 27% and a 30 minute walk any time to lower stress and and improve your mood.
