Is Stage IV Colon Cancer a Death Sentence?

Read Transcript

Actually that's not the case, and not all stage IV patients are the same so it's important to investigate all the options. Once the cancer spreads, for example, to the liver there are patients that can be cured with surgery on the colon and surgery on the liver to remove all the visible disease and then getting chemotherapy after and actually there's just one or two liver spots, almost half the patients can be cured of that.

If it's spread to other organs or it's not removable by surgery then cure is not usually an option although we're learning more and more, and there are some other advance procedures that involve surgery and special chemotherapies that can certainly prolong the patients lives and improve their quality of life.
