How to Prepare for a Colonoscopy

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Kevin Soldan. Did you turn 50 recently? Well it's time to schedule your first colonoscopy, but once a decayed test screens for colorectal cancer and polyps. For many, the tough part is preparing for the test, which happens the day before. First you eat only clear liquids and gelatin.

That could make you cranky and light headed. Then you have to chug quarts of what humorous Dave Barry calls the nuclear laxative. But a recent study suggest the clear-liquids-only thing may not be necessary after all. It turns out you may be able to eat a more satisfying fare before a colonoscopy, items like milk, yogurt and pudding.

In the study, doctors' ability to spot polyps was the same and the average colonoscopy time was also the same, 27 minutes. This isn't a done deal, but also isn't the first study to find this, so talk to your doctor. As for the nuclear laxative well that hasn't changed, but Dave Barry and I both have survived it and you will too, so sign up now and get it done.

It could save your life, colonoscopy exam is one that no one looks forward to, but its one that can really save your life, especially if you have a family history of colon cancer. For more tips to protect your health, watch all our health smart videos right here..
