Steady Your Blood Pressure With This Picnic Treat

Read Transcript

Hi, this is Dr. Oz with an easy tip to lower your blood pressure. The secret is watermelon. You can drop your blood pressure down a few notches by enjoying this juicy picnic treat more often. It turns out that watermelon is loaded with an amino acid called L-citrulline.Iin a small study of pre-hypertensive patients, this compound helped improve circulation and lower their systolic blood pressure by as much as 9 points.

Now, that may sound like a small drop, but it's enough of a drop to prevent pre-hypertension from progressing to full blown hypertension. So how does L-citrulline work as magic? Once it enters your body, it's converted into another amino acid that's key to the formation of nitric oxide, that's the stuff that helps you open up and relax your arteries. The amount of watermelon extract used in the study was the same amount as you get from having about seven cups of watermelon juice, that's a lot of juice, but other studies have shown blood pressure benefits with smaller amounts.

So, don't feel like you have to eat the whole melon, so whether you slice it, dice it, or juice it, the lesson here is to load up on your watermelon. For more ways to nourish your health, watch all of our Health Smarts, right here.
