You've probably heard of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Now another type of fat is making headlines: Omega-7s. In this video, Michael Roizen, MD, discusses research that suggests omega-7s can lower bad cholesterol and triglycerides.
Hi, Dr. Mike Roizen here with a smart tip that can help you stay younger. There's a new good fat that should be on your radar, you've already heard plenty about DHA, the great for you Omega-3 fatty acids in fatty fish and algae, which is where the fish get it from, and from fish oil supplements. Now research from Harvard Medical School, our own Cleveland clinic, universities in Hawaii and Japan suggest that purified Omega-7s are a healthy fat with amazing powers too.
Omega-7 squelched heart threatening LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and they boosted good for you HDL Cholesterol. Omega-7s amazingly also decreased fatty liver, a condition that can set the stage for diabetes and heart disease. In improved cells ability to take in blood sugar in several well designed studies.
My advice, well, four studies are better than one, but I'd like to see more human trials before recommending Omega-7s unconditionally. Still I'm intrigued enough that I take 200 milligrams of the purified Omega-7 in capsule form along with my 900 milligrams of DHA Omega 3s everyday. But before you add any supplement to your routine, always tell your doctor.
