Go Nuts for Better Health

Read Transcript

Hi, Dr. Oz here with today's smart health tip. I want you to go nuts. You know that nuts are an amazing super food. They're chocked full of healthy fats and proteins, they will curb your appetite, they will boost your heart health, keep your blood sugar steady, and it will even help lower your harmful LDL cholesterol.

Nuts, especially walnuts and almonds also help you feel happier, that's because they increase that feel good chemical in your brain called serotonin, but you don't need to eat a lot of nuts everyday to get all those benefits. How much is enough? Just 1-ounce daily. That's a small fist full, or about 14 walnuts, 24 almonds and keep an eye on those portions.

An ounce of nuts has about 200 calories. But here's a little bonus, up to 15% of the calories in a nut pass through your system undigested, so you get a nice calorie discount. For more ideas on how to eat smart and live better, watch all of our health tips, right here.
