Hi, I'm Dr. Doria Longoleski/g. Have you been diagnosed with a racing irregular heartbeat known as Atrial Fibrillation or AFiB? If so, make sure you know what kind of AFib you have. Here are the three Ps for Atrial Fibrillation. There's Paroxysmal AFib, where you experience a sudden and rapid spike in your heart rate that lasts for short as a few seconds, to as long as a few days.

This type of AFib usually resolves on its own. Then there's persistence AFib where your heart rhythm is out of whack and it stays that way until you get treatment. Finally, you may have Permanent AFib, where the usual treatments aren't doing the trick. it's possible for paroxysmal and persistive AFib to eventually morph into permanent Atrial Fibrillation.

If you're not sure which type of AFib you have, check with your doctor. Knowing the kind of AFib you're dealing with will help you and your doctor fine-tune your treatment, and is especially important to know if you ever have to go to the ER. I'm Dr. Doria. For more way to take care of your heart, watch all our smart tips.
