Research is showing that there is a connection between diabetes and Parkinson's disease. In this video, Dr. Robin Miller explains the reason for this common connection.
Is there a connection between diabetes and Parkinson's disease? It definitely looks like diabetes and Parkinson's disease are connected. Patients with diabetes have a third higher risk of developing Parkinson's. How they're connected, isn't really understood, but it may have to do with underlying inflammation or somehow insulin may be connected.
So a third higher it sounds high but what does that translate to the general population? It really doesn't, it's not a huge risk, it's 0.5% for non-diabetics. 0.8% for diabetics.
More than a million Americans have Parkinson's disease, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement. It's also linked to other conditions, such as diabetes. Experts discuss how to prevent and treat Parkinson's disease.
