"New" Side Effect of Diabetes: Osteoporosis and Bone Fractures

Hi, I'm Dr. Vander Wright. If you have diabetes, you know it has lots of potential complications from heart disease to vision problems and gum disease. Here's another one to watch out for, osteoporosis recent research links both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes to a higher risk of major bone fractures, including hip fractures.

They come as a surprise even to the experts. You can take these steps to protect your bones, ask your doctor about the new Fracks[sp?] Diabetes Study and whether you need to take like bisphosphonates for osteoporosis. If you have Type 2 diabetes, do everything you can to reverse it, you heard that right.

Reverse it. Losing extra weight, eating a healthy diet, and exercising, especially weight bearing workouts like strength training can help you wipe out diabetes symptoms, and they will help you boost your bone strength too.
