Which workouts are best to boost your bone health and prevent osteoporosis? In this Health Smarts video, fitness expert Mike Clark, DPT, shares tips for the best exercise options to build strong bones.
Your morning swim and daily bike ride might be good for your heart, lungs and weight but they don't do much for your bones. Hi, I'm Doctor Clark. For bone strength, do weight bearing exercises, activities that use mechanical strain which forces your body to work against gravity. Some of the best exercises are those with running and jumping such as racket sports, jumping rope and volleyball.
Lower impact exercises such as walking and weight-bearing yoga poses can also boost bone health while being gentle around joints. Adding balance exercises, and core strengthening workouts for abdominal, back and side muscles improve stability and coordination that can help prevent falls and guard against fractures.
So build up your muscles and you'll keep your bones healthy and watch all our smart tips right here.
Osteoporosis affects both men and women. Learn about bone density screening and find out how good nutrition (especially vitamin D) and exercise, such as strength training, help build strong bones to prevent osteoporosis.
