The first lady's kitchen garden has created a huge ripple effect across the country, says HealthMaker Shellie Pfohl, MS. In this video, she discusses how Michelle Obama has inspired schools across the country to start their own gardens.
Yes the garden at the White House the first lady's kitchen garden has been a huge, has created a huge ripple effect across the country and now when I'm out across the country I see a plethora of school gardens, community gardens and I think the first lady has been such an inspiration in that capacity.
We're seeing so many schools now are creating school gardens and they're either doing it by they're getting grants from the or donations from locally they're going after grants and those programs I've seen to be so successful when I see the pride in young people's faces by creating those school gardens which by the way can be physically active as well, what a great way to built in nutrition and physical activity by actually building the gardens and tending to them and harvesting and so forth, it's really encouraging to see what has transpired.
Shellie Pfohl, MS, was appointed as the Executive Director of the President's Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition by Barack Obama. She has a BA from the University of Northern Iowa and a MS from Northern Illinois University.
