Believe it or not, most people are genetically inclined to become obese, says HealthMaker Samuel Klein, MD. In this video, Klein explains why, and discusses how these genes were developed in the first place.
So genetics is very important because genetics really, we have developed our genes in order to survive harsh environments. We are all pretty much predisposed to being obese, food tastes good, it's pleasurable and physical activity is painful, so in general we're predisposed to becoming obese in a harsh environment 1000 years ago it was no problem because we couldn't get enough food and we could not be inactive to survive. Now this environment which they call obesogenic environment, it's very easy for those genes than to be have adverse effects by having us eat excessive amounts of food and being physically inactive.
Samuel Klein, MD, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University School of Medicine, is a nutritional specialist known for his research into weight loss and the causes of obesity.
