Hospitals can help you get better when you're sick, but they can also cause extra medical issues. In this video, HealthMaker Robert Wachter, MD educates viewers about the risks and benefits of hospital admission.
You should be in the hospital if you need to be in the hospital. I think when you don't need to be there, you're safer out of there and it's not just because of the errors but because the bacteria that we have in the hospitals are less safe or scarier than the ones that float around in the community.
If I am sick and need to be in the hospital, I go to the hospital but I go there with my eyes open and I try to choose a hospital that I think is good and is been paying attention to safety, it's a necessary evil.
Robert Wachter, MD, is professor and associate chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He discusses solutions to improve healthcare and reduce medical errors at American hospitals.
