Fish farming in open pens has drawn the ire of environmentalists, but HealthMaker and chef Rick Moonen believes we can safely farm fish and their important to sustainability. In this video, he discusses closed systems and open pen fish farming.
I believe that farmed fish are extremely important to the survival and the perpetuation of our sustainability on the planet. There are systems that I believe are, it's the open pen system that is really the most detrimental to the environment. There's closed containment systems that are much more sustainable because you're containing the aquaculture environment, and producing great fish.
So, today more and more you see a lot of farming coming out of closed containment systems, land-based systems that aren't affecting the ocean environment as well, and those are considered to be the most sustainable.
Chef Rick Moonen is a longtime advocate of sustainable seafood. In these videos he explains what sustainable seafood is, including the role of farmed fish, and shares tips to take the fear out of cooking fish at home.
