Health Insurance: Using Data to Improve Health Outcomes

I think there is a tremendous amount of promise to apply technology to healthcare to help it overall. Do I think it's not enough? I think we are at a turning point, I think that technology costs are low enough now, to really help healthcare system, and I think the innovation and the curve of innovation that's occurring is at a point it's really going to start to help healthcare industry as well.

Health needs to be part of your life, it doesn't need to be, it shouldn't be an extension of your life, you shouldn't have to think of poor health. You should embed it as part of your health and your lifestyle everyday. And I don't think we've done that, and that's one little place we are going to have to bend the trend lines to get people engaged.

The convergence of technology and with healthcare, it's critical to bringing down the cost of care for individuals as well as for the patients and providers, I mean even care givers, so for example things like activity monitors, wireless scales, you know things like that can really help me the consumer where they want to be mapped, and it really help engage them in their health and it's going to really bring down the cost.

The New England Journal of Medicine believes a study a few years back, in that study it's subject if you have someone in your social network becomes obese, you're 57% more likely to become obese yourself because they're in your social network. What the people around you and in your social network do and how they behave, what they eat, how often they exercise, that impacts you directly and your overall health and well being.

So we're taking data like that, as the health services' organisation as well as the health benefits' organisation, we take that data and we're engaging the end consumer in tools like OptimizeMe, for example, where you can bring your social network in and challenge each other to health and fitness goals.

Again we're finding it a process that individuals must do, for example, to get them actively engaged on how to understand. We are doing things like gamifying our myHealthcare Cost Estimator programs, so an individuals understand when they are going to go have a knee MRI done that the cost of that knee MRI and need to know about the provider, the place and the price and the procedure.

That's the four P's that they an know. And we have build gaming around and that's so the people understand what is it that they need to know before they make the decision of where to go have a knee MRI, foe example. Sucess in terms of engagement is going to depend on the type of the individual and that the overall health and well being of that individual is well.

Success can start as just getting someone to be more active [xx] out of that. Now 26% of the Americans get zero physical activity other than walking to work and if they haven't spent anytime working out. So success for someone like that could be just getting an hour per week and intense on the activity for example.
