The analogies that I gave in my talk this morning were cigarette smoking and seat belt use. It takes a long time, and it takes interventions at many levels. It may take thinking about tax on sugar sweetening beverages, it may take some changes in advertising policy, it may take more education or different kind of education in schools, we have to teach our docs, we don't teach them about obesity as an illness.
We teach them how to treat the diabetes, or the hypertension, or the fatty liver that they get as a result of the obesity.
Judith Salerno, MD, executive director of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, is an expert on aging and geriatric healthcare. She discusses the top challenges facing healthcare, including obesity and an aging population.
