Has Healthcare Become Too Reliant on Technology ?

We've become highly reliant on expensive leading edge technology. Americans are much more likely to get expensive brand name drugs than less expensive generics even when the generic is likely to achieve the same objective, Americans are more likely to get advanced forms of MRI and other imaging than Canadian across the border.

On the other hand the kind of technology I'm talking about is technology that replaces much more expensive human labor. The challenge we have we have in the United States is that one in seven hospital occurs just because the information needed to make the right decision at the time of admission wasn't available to the people who needed to make the decision.

One in five diagnostic tests is performed simply because that information was not available to the person who needed it, so it was more expedient to repeat the test than to go find the information.
