Schizophrenia is an illness of the brain, says HealthMaker Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, director, New York State Psychiatric Institute. In this video he discusses some common misconceptions about the disorder.
Schizophrenia is probably the kind of prototype mental illness. When people think of mental illness they think of somebody who is deranged, crazy, mentally unbalanced and probably more than any other other illness cuz Schizophrenia characterizes that historically. What it is is an illness that's non illness in mind as soon as the brain which is manifested in mental function and behaviour and affects about 1% of population.
Jeffrey Lieberman, MD, is Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute and holds the Lieber Chair for Schizophrenia Research at the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia. He graduated from Georgia Washington School of Medicine.
