Should Our Goal Be to Prevent Alzheimer's Disease or to Treat It?

I think we really in the end will need to prevent this disease, because the number of people over the age of 80 is rising rapidly, in fact about five times faster than the increase in the rest of the population. And that means, the number of Alzheimer's patients is going to triple between now and 2050, may be quadruple between now and 2015. And economically even if we have treatment, it's going to be a huge berg to treat a patient base that's that large. So I think in the long run, prevention is the strategy that we need to pursue very vigorously, but I certainly think that treating people with the disease is a highly desirable goal as well.
