How Can Genetic Testing Help Heal a Broken Healthcare System?

It's like any other industry, informed consumers tend to make better decisions, and if the right technologies are being deployed appropriately, for example targeted therapies. So if I've got a non small cell lung cancer of a certain histological type at a certain stage, and I've got a genetic mutation in each of our gene, I know there is a high likelihood I'll respond to a drug like tarceva or [xx], and if I'm given that information relative to that drug, and I'm educated on the fact that it's an oral medication, it's not an injectibale chemotherapy, I'm more likely to go to my doctor and sit down and say help me understand how this treatment may or may not benefit me.

Likewise, the physicians being educated to understand the very same things, so that as a medical professional whose informed, and a consumer, patient whose informed come together, they're making decisions that are very targeted and have a high probability of success. Therefore as we're spending significant amount of dollars on those therapies, we know that that has the best chance of succeeding of any potential therapy.

So why go with something that's traditional that may or may not for you, it goes back to your phrase of personalized medicine. As we understand our genetic make up, and as we get ourselves educated as to what that does and doesn't mean, and as their physicians do the same thing, we can come together and I think be more deliberate and more purposeful in how we manage our conditions, that saves dollars and when you look at it the wrong therapy administered in cancer tends to lead to a trip to the emergency room, which tends to be extremely expensive on the healthcare system.

If you could mitigate just at that alone by half, you would save the healthcare system billions of dollars just with that alone, and that's where we're really driving towards.
