Is Healthcare Money Being Spent Wisely with End of Life Care?

If we were making good shared decisions, then we would be spending dollars wisely. No body wants to ration care, but right now we're probably not spending our dollar wisely. Probably a third of the medicare spent is what we might call last years of life, but of course no physician can tell you what somebody's trajectory really is.

You could have a three year trajectory towards hospice, you could have a three month trajectory towards hospice. The important thing though is to make these decisions and to make them well, so that the patient or the patient's family is truly involved. I would say that if we achieve better quality of care, and we improve the patient and family satisfaction, then the resultant, the byproduct will probably be saved dollars.
