Hi, I'm Barbara Ficarra with your smart tip of the day. You've heard how important it is to get enough sleep but is it possible to sleep too much? Some research has found that too many z's might actually shorten your life. So what counts as too much sleep? The ideal sleep prescription depends on how much you are sleeping now.

According to a study of more than 10, 000 people, those who usually slept around five to six hours a night, and bumped up their sleep to seven or eight hours a night added years to their lives. But people who normally slept seven to eight hours and got even more sleep actually increase their mortality rate by 75%.

When it comes to sleep find out what works for you. The trick is to enjoy the benefits of good sleep but to be cautious about under doing it or overdoing it. Seven to eight hours is the recommended goal. If you have trouble sleeping at night or staying awake during the day see a doctor to determine the cause.
