What Are the Benefits of Skin Cancer Screening?

Read Transcript

Does a complete skin exam for skin cancer actually save lives? Yes, according to the American Cancer Society, 76, 000 people will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, and 9000 will die as a result. In areas where patients were routinely screened, melanoma deaths decreased to 1 in a 100, 000 which is a 50% decrease.

Are there enough dermatologists even around to screen everyone? No unfortunately, but there are a lot of doctors trained to look at the skin and they can kind of decide who needs to go to the dermatologist. I know a lot of places I have lived before it takes forever to get an appointment with the dermatologist because there aren't that many of them, right? However, if you think someone has a melanoma, they'll take him in right away.

Isn't there an acronym also for the skin about the borders the colors? Right A, B, C, D and E. And it stands for? Asymmetry, Borders, Color, Diameter and Extension if it's moving out.
