How Can I Prevent Skin Cancer?

Read Transcript

The most important prevention step you should know about skin cancer is that the sun is the number one cause of skin cancer. So, you need to really limit the exposure to the sun and also limit chronic tanning because tanning is actually an injury to the skin, you need to limit how many sunburns you get and the way to do that is to actually wear sunscreen.

I can't tell you how many of my patients say, yes, I wear sunscreen, and I say, are you wearing it now? And they say no, as a matter of fact no. So, everyday you should wear moisturizer with sunscreen in it. You should make sure you go to the drugstore and buy like 10 different types of sunscreen every year, and every person in your family should really use up an entire bottle of sunscreen every year, if not you're probably not using enough when you apply it, you need about a shot glass amount when you put it on over your whole body, and you need to reapply if you really out in the sun for more than one to two hours.

Often people don't bring it with them, so, if you're going to the softball game, or something, and you forget it, you're going to get a sunburn, so make sure you keep it handy and use it frequently.
