Is There Anything I Can Do to Prevent Multiple Sclerosis?

It's not as if MS is the most common disease in the United States. 1 out of 1000 is pretty significant, but it's still a small number, about 400,000 people. Certainly, we know that vitamin D deficiency is one of the factors that seems to increase the tendency to get multiple sclerosis. There's lots and lots of indisputable epidemiologic evidence for that.

We also know that smoking is an important factor in increasing the risk of getting multiple sclerosis. In fact children who grow up in homes where the parents smoke or somebody smokes, have 1.4 times the chance of getting MS versus family, brothers, relatives who don't. So that's a simple thing, I mean in theory, stop smoking. Another reason, among the many that there are to stop smoking.

I guess we should all move to the equator very rare to see MS in the equatorial parts of the world, it's not feasible. So, really the most important thing to do is lead a healthy lifestyle, get some vitamin D. Go in the sun once in awhile, maybe 15 minutes a day. I tell my patients 10 o'clock in the morning, 4.00 O' Clock in the afternoon, one time, 15 minutes, top off, no sunblock get your Vitamin D. There's evidence that smoking and Vitamin D also have an impact on MS after you're diagnosed, a negative one.

So get your Vitamin D up, stop smoking, tell your husband to stop smoking and so on.
