How Is HPV Related to Throat Cancer?

Read Transcript

Human Papilloma Virus is the most common sexually transmitted disease. It is the single cause of cervical cancer in women and over the course of the last 20, 30 years we have witnessed a sexual revolution, change in sexual norms and as a result there has been a larger transmission of the virus from women to men.

Largely although not only as a result of oral sexual habits, men develop the virus within their nuclear/g tissue of the torsal either at the base of tongue or the palatine tonsil and that virus sets itself into the genome and in 90% of patients they clear that virus over the course of a year or two years.

But in a select few that virus sets up in a chronic infection that can lead to the cancer.
