How to Prevent Weight Gain Over the Holidays

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Miller with five simple ways to prevent gaining weight during the holidays. First, replace high calorie holiday food with healthy seasonal treats. Keep the pumpkin pie, cookies, and fudge out of plain sight. Place walnuts, pistachios, cinnamon spice tea, juicy oranges, and ruby red pomegranate within easy reach.

Don't skip exercise, when time is tight, take three 10 minute walk each day for a total of 30 minutes and you are good. Choose cocktails wisely. Beer and red wine both raise appetite triggering hormone, choose a Chardonnay or Riesling instead. These white wines don't have the same hunger boosting effect.

Be careful at the buffet, check out the entire spread then choose only one or two specialties instead of three or four. You'll eat fewer calories when you have fewer choices, and check out a seat where you can't see the feet, so you're less likely to go back for seconds. Finally, practice moderation ,not deprivation, urge a little at parties, but eat sensibly the rest of the week.

With moves like these, you'll wake up on New Year's Day wearing the same size, or even a size smaller. For more ways to stay healthy, check out all our smart tips, right here.
