Help Your Child Learn to Like the Doctor

Read Transcript

Hi, Dr. Altman here with tips to make visits to the doctor easier on your kids. Some kids are afraid of the doctor, but you can help them get over that. Here's how. Role play at home to prepare your child for a check up. Toy doctor kits are a great way to help kids feel comfortable with the equipment and exam.

Use the toy stethoscope to listen to your child's heart. While you're at the appointment, relax. If you're relaxed, they will be too. Don't lie to your child and tell them it won't hurt if it will. Instead explain to them that a shot will keep them from getting sick. Let them know it will be a quick pinch but then it's over.

If your child has a favorite toy or blanket bring that too, and I'm always happy to examine a little patients favorite teddy bear, and if teddy is okay with it, chances are your child will be okay too, and make a special reward or fun treat a tradition to celebrate a good doctors visit.
