Hi, I'm Dr. Oz with some important tips to protect your eyes. Age-related Macular Degeneration is a disease of the central retina. There's a genetic link, but it doesn't seal your fate. Smart everyday habits can help protect your vision. If you smoke, stop. It doubles or triples your risk of Macular Degeneration, wear sunglasses that block 99% of UVA or UVB rays.
Lose weight if you need to. If your BMI is 30 or above, you're 2 1/2 times more likely to get macular degeneration. Control your blood pressure. If it's above 120/80 your Macular Degeneration risk goes up. Make sure you get plenty of Omega omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, E and zinc, and a daily dose of vitamin B. Also get moving.
Dry Macular Degeneration means too little oxygen is getting to the retina. Exercise improves oxygen supply throughout the body. I'm Dr. Ross, watch all our smart tips for more ways to stay well.
