A colorful diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, and whole grains is your best source of nutrition. In this Health Smarts video, Dr. Kevin Soden shares the best food sources for disease-fighting-- selenium, folic acid, and beta carotene.
Hi, I'm Dr. Kevin Soden. Supplements can be a smart choice if they have the right doses of nutrients, and if it's hard to get them from your daily diet, but always look to food as your first, best source of nutrition. A diet, rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, fish, nuts, and whole grains protects against all kinds of disease including cancer.
Here are great sources for these disease fighting nutrients. Selenium, your goal is 70-200 micrograms daily. Try tuna, curd, turkey, and sunflower seeds, or just one Brazil nut a week. Folic acid, your goal is 800 micrograms daily. Aim to get at least half of that from food. That's half a cup of lentils, one cup of papaya, and eight asparagus spears in a day.
Beta-carotene, the human body converts this to Vitamin A, and it's best to get your Beta-carotene from food. Two sweet potatoes, one equals more than three times the recommended daily dose of Vitamin A, spinach, carrot, cantaloupes, and mangoes. I'm Dr. Kevin Soden.
