Colon cancer is very curable and survivable provided detection is early. In this video, Sharmila Anandasabapathy, MD, a gastroenterologist, explains that later detection can result in lower survivability rates.
Colon cancer if it's diagnosed early is very survivable. It can be cured essentially. And certainly if you detected that at the stage of a polyp, for worse it can be confined into a polyp, it's close to a 100%. Colon cancer like esophageal cancer, it's important to diagnose early because once it has invaded the walls or spread into the lymphatics, those survival rates drops dramatically.
So the key in both of those cancers and in most cancers in general is early detection.
Did you know that colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.S.? Experts explain how to prevent, diagnose and treat colon cancer, including why everyone needs a colonoscopy starting at age 50.
