Smart Help for Your Child's Constipation

Read Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Altman. Preventing and treating constipation are very important no matter how old you are. Here're some natural oxidants. The best whole fruits are prunes, plums, cherries, apricots and grapes. Smart fruit juices are prune juice, apple juice, apricot nectar and pear nectar.

I find the prune juice seems to works the best. If your child won't drink prune juice, mix one part prune with two parts apple juice. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water everyday, to prevent constipation. Vegetables like cauliflower and broccoli have natural fiber that helps keep children regular.

Be sure you include fiber in your family daily diet. Choose breakfast cereal and bread with at least three grams of fiber per serving. Also look for high fiber crackers, two of these a day keeps many constipated preschoolers regular. If dietary changes don't work talk to your pediatrician, your child may benefit from a special diet or an over the counter medication.
