Hi. I'm Dr. Tanya Altmann. Are your tweens and teens spending too much time on Facebook? Are you? Social media can be useful.
It helps you stay connected to relatives and old friends. But people can spend too many hours a day on the computer or smartphones sucked into social media.
Just two hours a day sitting in front of the computer can increase your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 20% and your heart disease risk by 15%.
About 46% of 12-year-olds visit social networking sites. And that jumps to 62% by age 14.
It's important to establish guidelines and rules and help your child stay active. Plan family outdoor activities on a regular basis.
Encourage your child to sign up for sports and social groups at school. Limit social media use to 30 minutes a day
or reserve computer time for homework only. Real social interaction and physical activity set your family on the path to healthier lifelong habits.
