Hi, I'm Dr. Altmann. Does your child love it when you hit up the drive-through? Here's a reason to keep on driving.
According to a recent study, eating too much fast food may hurt your child's school performance. Researchers tracked more than 11,000 kids
through their middle school years. Fifth graders who gobbled more fast food than their peers had lower test score gains in reading, math, and science
when they reached eighth grade. Those who ate fast food three or more times a week even showed less improvement-- up to 20% in their scores.
More than half the kids said they ate fast food one to three times a week, and 10% reported eating it every day.
What is it about fast food that dumbs kids down? Diets high in fat and sugar knock out neurotransmitters young brains need to think,
form memories, and learn. So skip the fast food. Instead, plan ahead, and pack a nutrient rich meal or snack
when you know you'll be out on the go. Once kids can see and taste the difference, they'll discover how much more alert they are at play and school.
